Victory for democracy at SU All Students Meeting
By Shane Croucher | Published On November 17, 2009 | In Students' Union
One student-submitted motion fell and two passed at the All Students Meeting (ASM) on Tuesday, as students rallied to support The Linc’s campaign to maintain its ability to hold the University of Lincoln Students’ Union to account.
Students voted against limiting the time the SU allows itself to spend dealing with The Linc each week. A large number of proxy votes supporting The Linc were also submitted prior to the meeting, on behalf of students who could not attend.
Another motion on the standards of student accommodation in Lincoln also went through at the ASM. The Students’ Union’s financial statements and budgets for 2009 were all passed by a majority vote.
The final motion, submitted by the executive committee of the SU, which will change the structure of officers, also passed. The current number of six full-time staff will decrease to four, whereas the number of part-time officers will jump from six to nine.
The four full-time officers will consist of a president, and vice-presidents for activities and services, academic affairs, and welfare and diversity. Elections for the revised positions will take place in spring 2010.
A total of 85 union members attended the meeting, as well as 10 non-members. 115 proxy votes were submitted prior to the meeting. You can also download the ASM agenda and papers (ZIP archive).
Editor’s note — The Linc would like to thank to all the students and staff at the university who supported us at the ASM and helped to vote down the motion against us, maintaining independent scrutiny of the Students’ Union.
