It’s finally time for the much anticipated Cathedral Cup, where the University of Lincoln mens’ football team will take on their counterparts at Bishop Grosseteste at Sincil Bank tonight (kick off 7:45pm) in their first competitive fixture.

But who will win that trophy?

Last season, Lincoln had one of their best years to date with both of their teams coming in second place with the 2nd team also narrowly missing out on winning the Midlands Conference Plate.

This year has been a bit more mixed. The 1sts have struggled to gain any momentum and currently sit in fourth place but their 2nds have continued to get better and better and are topping the table. Tonight’s team will see a mix of all the Men’s Football teams, with most third years being picked.

While Bishop Grosseteste are in a lower division, they will be no pushovers. Like Lincoln 2nds, they top their division and only picked up their first loss recently when they fell to Leicester 3rds. Their president Callum Ward is also a Lincoln United player, so their quality isn’t too much a drop off from Lincoln.

But fans of Lincoln should be encouraged by the fact that when the two sides have faced eachother in pre-season friendlies, Lincoln tend to win quite comfortably. But under the lights of Sincil Bank, that could change tonight.
