LIVE BLOG: Students to vote on democracy motions at AGM

Hello and welcome to The Linc’s live coverage of tonight’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which includes a motion democracy at the SU.

Other motion on the agenda cover freedom of speech, NUS membership and bye-law amendments to bring in an elected council, reform SUggestions and reform the Executive Council.

The ASM takes place this evening, from 6pm, in the David Chiddick Building (DCB1102). The agenda for the meeting can be found on the Lincoln Students’ Union’s website.

A Student Union bylaw states ‘If a quorum is not present then the meeting will cease immediately’.

Students put forward their concerns and suggestions to SU President Elect Kudzai Muzangaza for how the SU will operate in the next academic year.

Student Calum Watt said: “I’m begging you as this is my last student meeting, please reinstate democracy at Lincoln SU.”

President-elect Kudzai Muzangaza acknowledges comments by members and says he will address student engagement into meetings such as tonight’s as per his manifesto in the forthcoming academic year.

One student suggests having ‘the best of both worlds’ by holding a student council meeting one month and an ASM the next.

She then hen goes on to say that the student leaders ‘have a lot of work they do behind the scenes’.

Student Michael Daniel says that’s there is ‘very low interest’ in SUggestions and student involvement is low because some of the suggestions made are not serious.

SU President-elect Kudzai Muzangaza says he agrees with introducing an elected council if ‘students believe it’s the best way to engage’ and it’s something he says he ‘will take on board’.
