Lincoln City Football Club caused a stir online on Wednesday, January 2nd 2013, as a tweet which they posted in reply to a news story from Newport County FC went viral.

Newport County FC tweeted: “We can confirm that Jake Thomson has joined Lincoln City on a month’s loan.”

The Imps responded, via Twitter, saying: “Can you therefore get the paperwork signed and sent to us so the move can be completed???” This tweet was retweeted over 1,000 times within eight hours.

The plot thickened though when a Twitter user under the username @crl041984 tweeted saying: “bit unprofessional isn’t it Lincoln, just give Newport a call.”

Lincoln City’s response read: “Surely the unprofessional approach is announcing a loan move that hasn’t even happened yet???”

Despite the tweets, later in the day, Jake Thompson’s loan was confirmed between the two clubs. The Trinidad & Tobago international with two caps to his name joined Newport last summer, having spent the majority of the previous season with Forest Green Rovers.

The midfielder is initially joining on an emergency one-month loan and it is hoped that international clearance will be granted in time for Thomson to be eligible for Saturday’s trip to Ebbsfleet United. However, a clause in his deal means that he won’t be able to face Newport when the teams meet a week later.

The deal came five hours after the series of tweets which caused a stir on Twitter.
