The Bafta award-winning actor was best known for his roles in films Alien, The Elephant Man and Harry Potter, and had been treated for pancreatic cancer since 2015.

He was educated in Lincoln and Grimsby, and in 2014 became an honorary doctor of arts at the University of Lincoln in recognition for his work in film, television and the theatre.

Later that year Sir John delivered a lecture as part of the University’s Great Minds series, where he talked about his life, career and upbringing in Lincolnshire.
