Lincoln have been crowned as winners of this year’s Humber Games, after a team from Hull was forced to forfeit points earned in the contest.
The Hull University Union (HUU) investigated a complaint regarding non-Hull students included in the sports group, and chose to uphold the allegation.
In a statement, HUU said the club have ‘admitted wrong doing’.
“As a consequence of the inclusion of non-Hull students in a team and production of a deliberately inaccurate team and results sheet, in accordance with the Varsity 2018 rules, the team have forfeited all points associated with their competition,” they said.
The news means that Lincoln win against Hull with 268 to 206, as opposed to the 322 to 151 win for Hull that was previously announced.
Hull University Union then went on to add: “Representatives of the club in question have apologised for their behaviour and regret the consequences for the wider sports community at Hull.
“We are committed to sporting excellence and to integrity in competition and will be taking action to ensure the issue is not repeated.
“We would like to congratulate Lincoln on their success in Varsity 2018.”
Update: The Hull University Swimming Club have since posted a statement on Instagram, saying ‘the decision to admit to our wrong doing was made by our committee’.
They said: “Rightly this has resulted in the disqualification of our team and consequently forfeited the Varsity title, which all teams worked extremely hard to attain on Saturday 10th March.
“It is our deepest regret that our actions have had a wider effect on the sporting community and we would like to sincerely apologise; firstly to the AU [Athletics Union], the Union and the University. Secondly, to all our members and every other team that competed.
“We’d also like to apologise to Lincoln Swim Team who were a pleasure to host throughout the day and also congratulate Lincoln on their victory.
“We have been working closely with the Union following the incident and will continue to work alongside them to rectify the situation.”
