Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership have set up a new anti-speeding campaign.

The “Bump” Up Your Support for Road Safety scheme, as the title may suggest, involves putting bumper stickers on the back of your car.

The stickers read “Slow Down in Lincolnshire”. The campaign hopes to remind drivers to stick to speed limits and be more considerate.

PCSO Dave Bunker, based in Skegness, said: “Since the end of last year and the beginning of this year, our neighbourhood priorities have been to deal with speeding issues, as we were getting a lot of complaints from members of the public in Skegness and in other areas of Lincolnshire.

“I did some research and schemes such as this one worked really well in Colorado and Denver in America, so we developed it to meet our needs in Lincolnshire,” PSCO Bunker said. “We are looking for a way to engage with the community and get them supporting us on this.”

“Ultimately, we want speeding to be as socially unacceptable as drink driving or using a mobile phone while driving,” he added.

John Siddle from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership said a quarter of all collisions nationally are caused by speed.

“The idea is that we want people to start thinking about their speed across Lincolnshire, to keep themselves safe and to keep others safe.

“The bumper stickers are a big thing in the United States and we wanted to try something slightly different than we have done before.

“We’ve always worked on the principle of the three ‘E’s’, which is engineering, enforcement, and education, which is what we are hoping to do,” said Mr Siddle.

“We want to get the message out there that speed is significant and speed is the biggest complaint the police get from the public,” he added.

The bumper stickers are available now from most police stations, including Lincoln City Centre Police Station on South Park Avenue. They are also available at town halls in some villages across the county.
