The Portland Street Project has finished six planters of flowers in preparation for its first spring.
The community garden was funded by the City of Lincoln Council and the Lincolnshire Economic Action Partnership in March 2022, with progress booming in the past six weeks.
Eight more planters are still to be built over the winter, with assistance from 24 local residents across seven nationalities.
Organiser Janice Schlanker said: “It’s all about getting everyone together, making new friendships, building on existing friendships and interacting with the broader community. It’s all been about community, right from the start.
“We wanted to change the perspective as well. People have a certain opinion of Portland Street and the people who live here, and that does present its challenges.
“But I knew that there was a strong sense of community here that people weren’t seeing.”
The garden was first conceived in Summer 2021, and received £2,500 from the Community Grant.
Other support was offered by Sage Gardeners and Lincs Wildlife Trust, among many others, and planters were built by students from the Abbey Access Centre.
Janice said: “This is my first ever attempt at gardening. My father was the big gardener at home, and he grew all our own fruit and veg when we were growing up, but I’d never actually grown anything myself.”
Plans for the garden do not stop after this spring; with residents hoping to extend planters to the entrances of their gardens and further down the terrace.
Janice ultimately intends to turn back gardens into a community kitchen garden.
