The world’s largest steampunk festival has returned to Lincoln for its 13th year, starting on Friday, August 25 and concluding on Monday, August 28.

Sword fighting choreographer Kaneta Rena, 28, came all the way from Japan.

The Asylum steampunk festival includes Mad Hatter-themed tea parties, stalls, music and talks from creators.

Thousands of people have travelled to the Cathedral Quarter from the UK and beyond to show off their Victorian and sci-fi inspired outfits.

A Grand Parade will go through the Historic Quarter and Castle grounds from 10.30am to noon on Monday. Other Monday events include an Illicit Market, Parasol Duelling, a Penny Dreadful workshop and a steampunk Star Wars photoshoot.

John H, 55, and John “Without a H”, 36, relaxing not too far from Alyx Dyna, 25, and his moving robot Sparky.

Crafter Alyx Dyna, who was on a Meet the Makers panel, made his own outfits for The Asylum.

Alyx said: “I made my robot, as well as a rifle and two other things at the same time, but he was around one or two months of solid work. I do have a background in mechanical engineering, but I taught myself the electronics.”

Steampunk John H, who included fantasy rams horns on his top hat, described the style of the festival as “just what I like.”

Nigel Brumby, 54, as “the Vashta Nerada” wasn’t the only Doctor Who character present, a steampunk TARDIS by Martin Rayner, 54, could also be spotted.

Long-time crafter Nigel Brumby said: “I love The Asylum. This is a paper cut out, with polyester resin and a money box, and I run around scaring the normals.”

More event details are available on The Ministry of Steampunk website, and visitors can buy day tickets in Castle Square.

The Ministry of Steampunk’s next celebration will be the Steampunk Hulloween Festival over Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22.
