Lincoln City Women boss says strong winds ‘‘played a part’’ in one of the goals conceded during defeat to Peterborough United.
Lee Mitchell says that the strong winds were going to play a part ‘‘one way or another’’ in his side’s 3-2 defeat to visitors Peterborough.
Posh completed the comeback late on in the second-half through Emily Brett and an own goal, despite her side trailing 2-1 at half-time.
Despite the score line, the Imps did well to keep key Posh players quiet such as Keir Perkins and Tara Kirk.
Mitchell said: ‘‘I think we did well to nullify their threat, they started off with a box midfield which we were prepared for. We nullified that and then they changed their tactics 20 minutes in to go to a 4-3-3 which we were more than comfortable with.’’
‘‘We knew we had to come out at 2-1 and get a goal and that would have changed the game we knew that. You can’t just sit back at 2-1 because they’re too good of a side to do that,’’ he added.
Topsy-turvy game:
City went 1-0 down early on in the game due to a Brett opener, however this was met with a swift reply thanks to a Maddi Green equaliser and a Leah Hardy goal.
When asked about his sides response to going a goal down, Mitchell said: ‘‘I think that just about sums our character up, we’re like that nothing fazes us.’’
‘‘It was nice to get two goals and look more of a threat in the attack and threaten their goal, so that was nice,’’ he added.
Walking out at Sincil Bank:
There were 288 fans in attendance at the LNER Stadium, a huge turnout compared to the usual Moorlands crowds.
In particular, there was a big crowd of young girls from local football clubs, who got to meet the players after the game.
Mitchell said: ‘‘I think that’s one thing our players do really well, win or lose. We’ve been here before against a very good Newcastle side and got taken apart a few years ago, but the players dealt with that and went over and took pictures with the fans and youngsters.’’
‘‘It’s brilliant to see the mix of fans, all the youngsters and families that came down and we really appreciate that,’’ Mitchell expressed.
A fortnight to recharge:
City will now turn their attention to April 21st as they travel to Notts County, giving them around two weeks to recover from their tough match against high flying Peterborough. The Imps will be eager to turn their form around, having lost three successive league games.
Notts County conceded six to second-placed Sporting Khalsa whilst the Imps were in action. The full-time score ended 6-1 to the away side, making it Notts County’s seventh loss in their last ten games.
Lee Mitchell said: ‘‘Overall we will reflect on it [the Peterborough game]. We’ve got a week off now as in no games but it means we have to go to County and get the win there now, so the pressures on for that.’’
