Russ Wilcox has revealed that Gainsborough Trinity continue to spin transfer plates as the season opener nears.

The Holy Blues kickstart their Northern Premier League campaign with a trip to Ilkeston Town on Saturday, August 10.

When quizzed by The Linc on if he is seeking to add any more players to his squad, Wilcox said: “We are looking all the time, we are spinning plates as we speak now. There are irons in the fire, there are certain things we are trying to do.”

Gainsborough have already had a busy summer transfer window, adding a stream of acquisitions and successful trialists to a core list of retained players.

Most recently, Trinity announced that goalkeeper Dylan Wharton had made a remarkable return to the club following his release by Sheffield United.

Are There Any Loans to Come?

The loan market often becomes more active once the season has actually kicked off, with parents clubs willing to let players go, and buying clubs knowing exactly what they need to add.

Wilcox said: “The loan market is a difficult market, but it’s one we have to look into, especially if we get one or two injuries. So, we’ve always got to be on the ball.”

It has been confirmed that new signing Edwin Essel will miss a “big chunk” of the upcoming season, after sustaining a knee injury in the pre-season friendly against Barnsley.

The Holy Blues manager, who is entering his first full season in charge of the club, confirmed that he is “very pleased” with the additions he has made over the course of the summer.

He said: “I think you would always like more as a manager, but there are those restrictions like there are at every football club. I knew that coming in.

“We’d love some more investment in the football club, that’s me putting it out there. I think everyone else at the football club has done the same. Everyone knows that money talks; if you can have a bigger squad, a better squad, then you can be successful.”

While Wilcox’s calls for more investment may come to fruition in the long-term, his squad has already been given a boost in the short-term by securing players who are adaptable to playing in multiple positions.

That will come in handy as Gainsborough Trinity head into a long and challenging season, which will most definitely hold some twists and turns.
