Lincoln United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Gresley Rovers.

Paul Grimes came close to opening the scoring inside the first minute as his effort from close range was kept out by Charlie Wood.

On the 20 minute mark, new recruit Owen Vincent won a free-kick in a dangerous area. However, Leo Priestley was unable to recreate his peach against Wisbech Town, as the set piece flew over the bar.

A Gresley man whipped a dangerous ball into the six yard box, but fortunately for the home side no attacker was able to get on the end of it, and it sailed away from danger.

Adam Barthram nearly found the top corner after good link up play between Priestley, Grimes and Vincent, but his right footed effort was always rising. Another dangerous free kick almost gave The Whites their opener as Henry Moore’s flick back fell at the feet of Grimes who’s finished rolled wide.

Goalkeeper Jack Steggles was called into action on his 100th Lincoln United appearance, when he easily dealt with a long-range valley from Gresley captain Adam Lansdowne.

A Second-Half Brace for Lincoln United:

The Whites opened the scoring on the other side of the break, in the 58th minute, as player-assistant manager Grimes struck a sweet half-volley past the outstretched ‘keeper. The hosts had almost fell behind just before their opener, when Rovers headed a dangerous corner wide.

Henry Moore squandered a golden chance to double Lincoln’s lead just a few minutes later, as he headed over from just a few yards out. Cleethorpes Town dual-registered attacker Vincent looked to be in behind, but the Gresley ‘keeper came out well to deny his chance.

The chances kept coming as the Whites got a foothold in the game. Jaime Ture eventually got the second of the game, as he was found by Grimes and finished calmly.

It was far from perfect for The Whites, but the result marked a first home win of the season and came with a professional performance.

Elsewhere, captain Paudie O’Connor’s brace helped Lincoln City to a 3-2 at Burton Albion. Gainsborough Trinity settled for a point in their Northern Premier League opener, away to Ilkeston Town.
