Organisers hail “incredible” soapbox derby in Lincoln, after day of fundraising and racing.

The much-anticipated first soapbox race in the city, hosted by ‘Krazy Races’, brought locals out onto the streets in their droves. Despite a rain-filled afternoon, the event has been deemed a success by the organisers.

Danny Scoffin, head of brand and strategic development for Krazy Races, spoke to The Linc at the end of the all-day event.

He said: “It’s been an incredible day. We had a little bit of rain at the end of it, but people just wanting to stay, the brollies went up! I think it’s the best of Britain isn’t it, when you do one of these crazy events and the brollies just go up when it rains. People didn’t leave, they just wanted to stay and have a fun day, and that’s what it’s all about.

“It hasn’t dampened people’s spirits. I think the best thing is, even with the rain, people have been smiling through the event, the teams have loved it, the crowds here have loved it. It’s just been a fantastic, feel-good event.”

The Runaway Rustons, who were racing on behalf of headline charity Lincoln City Foundation, came away with first-place, after being the fastest of the 30 eclectic teams.

Rand Farm Park and the Ultimate Driving Machine made up the top three, while a number of other teams took home awards. The ‘Public Vote’ for viewers’ favourite team went to Gridline Racing, The Flinstone-inspired Bedrock Bunch picked up the best design award, and Jailhouse Frock also took home a prize.

Mr. Scoffin added: “This is our last event of the season and a lot of people think it all ends today, but the really nice thing is we start to hear the charity figures over the next few days. And, it’s been a great feel-good day today, but over the next few days we’ll see how much the day has raised, which is what it is all about.”

Krazy Races have now hosted six events this summer, as Lincoln capped off a tour around Shrewsbury, Crewe, Warrington, Stockport, and Wolverhampton.

Organisers admitted they would “love” to return to Lincoln for a re-run next year, but said the decision came down to local business leaders.

Mr. Scoffin said: “We get invited into area by councils and business improvement groups, and we were really fortunate this year to be brought in by Lincoln BIG. So, it’s up to them. We are going to have conversations with them over the next few weeks, but we would love to be back and we have everyone wants us back next year.”

No the racing is in the rear view mirror, focus turns to totting up the amounts raised for businesses and charities at the derby.
