FA Trophy action is coming up next for Gainsborough Trinity, as they face Chester in the second round of the competition.

The Holy Blues have beaten Kettering Town and Clitheroe to reach the stage, alongside their well-documented victories in the FA Cup.

Gainsborough boss Russ Wilcox spoke to The Linc ahead of the tie, and said: “It’s a really tough draw. They’re up the top end of the National League North, with a good manager. They play good football, and they’re an ex-Football League club.”

“It’s a really good draw too, I think, it’s tough, but so was the Boston one. It’s another challenge for us, and hopefully they bring a few supporters. They’re well followed.”

As Wilcox alluded to, the Holy Blues have caused cup upsets already this season. A late leveller for Boston United forced a replay at the Pilgrims, only for Gainsborough to cruise to a remarkable 4-0 win thanks to a stunning performance.

On FA Trophy duty, Declan Howe and Lewis Butroid netted in the third qualifying round, away to Kettering, before they then swept past Clitheroe. Wilcox admitted the 4-1 scoreline did not tell the full story of an otherwise close game, but knew his team deserved the vistory.

Javelle Clarke, Will Lancaster, Sisa Tuntulwana, and Howe, all found their names on the goalscoreres list come the final whistle.

A Potential “Lucky Omen” for Gainsborough Trinity:

Wilcox made note of a potential good omen during a previous meeting with Chester. During his time in charge of Farsley Celtic, alongside currently Gainsborough Trinity players Lewis Butroid and Bobby Johnson, he came up against the Blues.

He said: “We managed to beat them in the Trophy when I was at Farsley. We actually drew 2-2 and beat them on penalties, so hopefully that is a lucky omen for me, and Lewis Butroid, and Bobby Johnson.

“It’s a tough game, it’s a tough draw. But, I’m pleased we’re at home. First and foremost it’s nice to get a home draw, and the Trophy is finished on the day, with extra time and penalties,” the Trinity manager added.
