Lincoln United made it back to back county trophy finals with a penalty shootout win over Brigg Town.

The Whites took a first half lead through Jack McMenemy before Danny North’s backheel equalised for the visitors.

The hosts won the shootout 2-1, with converted spot kicks from skipper Elliot Dye and goalkeeper Jack Steggles, who made his fair share of saves during the shootout.

United coach Jon Taylor said he did not think Lincoln were at their best, but was pleased with the win.

He said: “It’s a bit disappointing because we know are capable of so much more but in spells we were good and found the goal. We let Brigg back into it but the goal was quite scrappy.

“Owen’s (Vincent) injury disrupted our rhythm a bit and we went a bit flat after that, the shootout was horrific but we reached the final so we’re pleased.”

Only three spot-kicks were converted in the shootout, with Lincoln coming out on the right side of it. The Whites won the Lincolnshire FA County Senior Trophy last season, edging past Boston Town in a tense shootout at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

Goalkeeper Jack Steggles stole the headlines in the penalty shootout, with three saves and a converted spot kick.

The Lincoln United shot-stopper has made a habit out of winning games for his side on spot-kicks.

He spoke after his most recent heroics, and said: “Their number ten tended to go right, but the rest were guesses really. I couldn’t wait for the shootout when the clock was running down.

“I asked to take one, I always ask to take one, of course there is luck to it but I do my research and try and look at the eyes and see if they give it away.”

The Whites will look to defend their silverware, as they will face either Bourne Town or Blackstones FC in the final.
