Gainsborough Trinity caused a shock in the FA Trophy, claiming the scalp of the National League’s top side York City.

Declan Howe scored the only goal of the game, securing family bragging rights as brother Callum was left out of the match-day squad by York.

His strike on the hour mark saw the Holy Blues into the last 16 of the premier non-league competition for the first time in over a decade, knocking out another higher ranked opponent in the process.

Gainsborough Trinity manager Russ Wilcox:

Holy Blues manager Russ Wilcox spoke to The Linc, and said: “They’re a top team, they’re top of the league for a reason, conceded very few goals and scored the second most. So, to get a clean sheet against York City is a great achievement.”

He said it was “very pleasing” to beat one of his former sides, where he secured safety in League Two more than before being dismissed early on in the following term.

The Two Dylans:

Captain Dylan Cogill and goalkeeper Dylan Wharton also spoke to The Linc after the victory over York City.

The skipper said: “We knew coming into this game that it would be difficult… we knew we had to be at it, and luckily we all turned up today.”

Wharton was called into action multiple times during the first 45 minutes, and ensured parity at half-time with a number of strong saves.

He said: “I did my bit to keep us in it, but credit to the centre-halves and everyone who stopped crosses. It was an amazing team performance, it’s not just me taking the clean sheet.”
