Lincoln Racing has been established by a group of students at the University of Lincoln with hopes of competing at Silverstone.

The 38-member student team study a range of subjects, including sports journalism, engineering, media, and finance.

The team hopes their car can be entered into the Formula Student competition, which would see them race at the historic Silverstone race-track this coming July.

Formula Student is an educational engineering competition that requires teams to build their own single-seater open-wheeled race car. They want to encourage young people to pursue careers in engineering and have over 100 teams competed every year with the aim of transitioning aspiring engineers from university to the workplace.

Team principal Dylan Beanlands, a fourth-year engineering student, shared his hopes for the team.

He said: “Our primary goal is not just to build a car and compete, it is to set the foundations for future years. We have a range of students that make up our team, all studying at the University of Lincoln. From first to fourth years, we study degrees from engineering and maths to journalism and music.

“We are grateful for the support that we have already received and hope to be successful in the future.”

The society have had parts of their donated to them by local businesses, including a chassis for the base structure and Suzuki GSXR motorbike engine to power the car.

Millie Johnston, head of media, added: “Being part of this team allows me to put parts of my degree into practice, whilst also developing new skills. We have a great team full of enthusiastic members all with the same passion for motorsport.”

“The support we have received from lecturers, fellow students, family members, friends and people within engineering, motorsport and media industries have been immense. We couldn’t be more grateful and hope to do everyone proud.”

The team hope that their dreams can come true by securing the last of their funding.

With a £2,100 entrance fee to race at Silverstone in the summer needed, the team has managed to raise £2,000 of this so far.

After that mark is reached, the team will need to support further funding of around £20,000 to finish their car and make it ready for racing.
