Lincoln United Women retained their County Cup crown with a tense extra-time victory over rivals Lincoln City Women.

The Imps were close to seeing out a victory in 90 minutes, before a United equaliser sent the game to extra-time.

Lee Mitchell’s side then turned it around to win the Lincolnshire County Cup, keeping it at Ashby Avenue for the third year in a row with a 3-2 win.

Mitchell joined The Whites’ part-way through the current campaign, and has secured safety in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands after promotion under now-Boston Town men’s boss Chris Funnell last term.

The United manager said: “I thought it was a great game of football, I thought Lincoln City were superb, they gave everything, and everyone watching as a neutral would have got their money’s worth.”

“I feel elated that we got the win in the end, we had to come from behind, City fought and fought and kept out chances to a minimum.

“I am just glad that we got the win, I thought the girls were superb, they have put everything on the line today.”

Former Imps manager Mitchell was keen to emphasis the positives for the wider county, as over 300 spectators made their way to Boston United’s Jakemans Community Stadium for the showpiece Lincolnshire County Cup final.

He said: “Lincolnshire is in a good spot for women’s football based on that tonight, and it is exciting times ahead for Lincolnshire.”

Charlotte Dinsdale, who has led a youthful Imps squad through a difficult season, praised her side’s character to battle back in extra-time.

She said: “I have no words of how proud of the girls I am today, we came in as underdogs and the way we have trained this way, the warm-up, the mentality was right.

“The players don’t deserve [to lose] because it was a hard-fought game, and every respect to Lincoln United, congratulations to them.”
