It was a long Saturday afternoon for Lincoln United after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Brighouse Town, bringing an end to the Whites’ three game unbeaten streak.

Their manager, Scott Hellewell spoke to LincSport reporter Tommy Woolerton after the game and told us what he felt went wrong for his side.

“The basics of defending went out the window today and they punished us for not getting tight enough to our man,” were the key messages he delivered after Saturday’s game.

The Whites had been a goal to the good after the skipper Elliott Dye rifled a penalty into the top left corner just past the half hour mark.

Brighouse were quick to reply with a goal of their own before the break and Hellewell made it clear that from the sideline, he thought: “As soon as we conceded it was game over, we just took our foot off the gas and look what happened.”

When asked about the stop/start nature of the first half that lasted an hour, Hellewell said: “It’s just part and parcel of football.

“We lost a man to a bleeding head and they lost one to a swollen eye, that’s just part of the game isn’t it?”

Hellewell spoke on the quality of the opposition, and after telling us that he felt his side were “out-battled and out-classed,” he said it was “back to the drawing board” ahead of Lincoln United’s clash against Bridlington Town on Tuesday night.
