Russ Wilcox was amazed that his side didn’t come away with all three points yesterday, as Gainsborough Trinity were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Rushall Olympic.
The Pics took the lead towards the end of the first half despite looking second best as Kian Ryley struck into the top left corner from 30-yards out.
Trinity then continued to push throughout the five minutes of injury time, as Bobby Johnson and Sisa Tuntulwana both had headers well saved.
It was then down to Will Lancaster to head home from a corner to level the game up with just over 20 minutes remaining, but they couldn’t quite find a winner as Gainsborough dropped out of the Northern Premier League play-offs.
However, the Holy Blues still sit level on points with Stockton Town who occupy that final play-off spot with Trinity currently holding up to four games in hand on the sides above them.
Speaking on the game, Gainsborough Trinity manager Russ Wilcox said: “To come away with a point today is cruel.
“Their keeper has had a good game, but we’ve missed some guilt edge chances that we need to start putting away.
“We’ve just got to improve in that top end of the pitch and need to be more clinical, if we’re more clinical then we’ll win more games.”
This was the second time that the Holy Blues had faced up to Ian Long’s side after defeating them 2-1 in this season’s FA Cup third Qualifying Round.
On how that game helped his side today Wilcox said: “I knew what they were gonna do, but it’s about our shape as well.
“It’s what we do against the opposition and how we haven’t got three points I’ll never know. The group is amazing, I’m so proud to be in charge but I was a bit disappointed in the crowd today.
“I thought there would be a bigger turnout than that after the show we put on, on Sunday, against a League Two team but I couldn’t be prouder of the group.”
Wilcox’s side now face a long trip to Lancashire on Tuesday night as they face up to 15th placed side Bamber Bridge with the hope of jumping back into the play-offs.
