Gainsborough Trinity fell to seven points outside the play-offs as they were beaten 3-2 by West Yorkshire side Guiseley AFC on Boxing Day.
Russ Wilcox made one change to the side that drew 0-0 with Ilkeston the week before as Fraser Preston came in on the right in place of Sisa Tuntulwana.
It was an end-to-end first as both teams had their fair share of possession, but it was the hosts that came forward first as Charlie Parks was forced to head behind for a corner.
The Lions then came forwards again ten minutes later as Amir Berchill cut inside from the right hand side but David Robson easily smothered the effort low to his right foot.
Trinity then grew into the game for the remainder of the half as Aaron Simpson threatened continuously down the right.
However, it was his opposite full-back that eventually carved an opening as his first time effort flew over from 18-yards out.
With just over ten minutes remaining of the half it was the Holy Blues that broke the deadlock as Fraser Preston won a free kick on the edge of the area.
He stepped up to take it himself but could only find the wall as the ball flicked up and landed with Lewis Butroid who poked home first time from 12-yards out.
From there it was a game marred by injuries as Trinity captain Bobby Johnson was lifted off following an ankle injury.
Harrison Beeden and Jordan Helliwell both followed in the second half with a suspected broken nose and a hamstring injury respectively.
On those injuries, Gainsborough manager Russ Wilcox said: “They cost us today and it’s going to cost us long term because players like that are so difficult to replace.”
It quickly made a difference as the hosts started the second half the better side and the pressure showed just 12 minutes in.
Jordan Thewlis danced around two Trinity defenders before he miraculously bent the ball into the far top right corner.
However, it was an all action final 15 minutes of the game as Elliot Owen struck the post from a corner before Robson was forced to save from distance.
Then with 12 minutes to go, the hosts found themselves ahead as Lucas Odunston drove through midfield from the right back position.
He then found Thewlis who prodded the ball home for his second of the game, however it was an instant reply from Trinity.
Within 60 seconds they went straight up the other end as Frank Mulhern found the bottom left corner to draw the game level.
However, that didn’t prove to be the boost that Wilcox’s men needed as they were dealt a knockout blow with five minutes remaining.
This time it was a set piece as Ollie Brown was left unmarked at the back post.
Despite the ball not reaching him he was still able to close in and ensure that Jake Lawlor’s flicked nestled in the bottom right corner.
That was the last chance of the game as Trinity had all of the ball but couldn’t quite threaten in the seven minutes of injury time despite a series of corners.
On the game as a whole Wilcox said: “This is a tough place to come and these are a good outfit, if you look at the squad they’ve built here they’ve done a good job.”
