Lincoln City have been eliminated from the Vertu Trophy by a familiar face as they were beaten 2-0 by Huddersfield Town in the Round of 32.
An opener from former City striker Joe Taylor was then followed up by a Murray Wallace header in the final five minutes as the Imps continued to push to the end.
Michael Skubala made nine changes from the side that beat Port Vale 1-0 over the weekend as Dom Jeffries made his second start of the season.
Ivan Varfolomeev, Dexter Lembikisa and Zach Jeacock were also among those to return as the Imps lost their unbeaten start to the Vertu Trophy.
A pensive affair:
The visitors threatened first, as Marcuss Harness headed a deep free kick back across goal where Wallace reacted first to narrowly head the ball over.
Taylor then raced through with just over 25 minutes gone but Ryley Towler slid in well just as the attacker looked to roll the ball into the bottom left corner.
City’s first real effort on goal then came just two minutes later as Reeco Hackett looked to bend a free kick towards Lee Nicholls’ right-hand side but he caught the shot easily.
Former Imp Joe Taylor looked to dance his way through the Lincoln backline but seemed to get the ball stuck under his feet before he somehow forced the save out of Jeacock from 10-yards out.
With just under ten minutes left of the half Rob Street drove the Imps forward before he was stopped by Jow Low, although the ball only bounced to the feet of Freddie Draper who dragged his shot wide from 25-yards out.
The best chance of the half came in the three minutes of injury time as Tom Hamer’s long throw fell to substitute Draper six-yards from goal.
However, he could only put his shot straight at Nicholls who managed to claw the ball away for the Terriers to clear.
That was the last action of an energetic first half in which the visitor’s arguably had the better of the chances, but it was City that came closest to opening the scoring.
Visitor’s see the game out
However, the West Yorkshire side broke the deadlock just four minutes into the second half as May once again headed a deep corner across goal.
Low looked to be there to turn it home for the visitors, but he miscued his effort, and it fell down to former City striker Taylor to turn the ball home.
Ten minutes later, Jeacock was forced into a brilliant double save as May pounced on a mistake from Towler and raced through but Jeacock stood tall to save before he tipped the rebound over.
Jack Moylan looked to get City quickly back into the game but his attempt was well saved before the game settled into a strong spell of possession for the Imps.
With just over ten minutes to go, Draper looked destined to head home from a Moylan cross but the ball just evaded him six-yards from goal.
The Imps continued to push towards an equaliser in the final ten minutes as Reeco Hackett had a low deflected shot well saved before Frankie Okoronkwo fired over from the resulting corner.
However, that didn’t stop the visitors from trying to put the game to bed as they broke forward from a Lincoln corner and forced Bayliss to block on the goal-line.
The visitors did then double their lead from the resulting corner as Wallace headed home at the back post to see the Terriers progress.
That result sees Lincoln City bow out of the Vertu Trophy at the Round of 32 stage despite having the chances to at least see the game to penalties.
Next up, the Imps welcome South Yorkshire side Barnsley next week, with loss to Salford City in the first round of the FA Cup seeing them without a game this weekend.
