Lincoln United secured a massive 2-1 win over Heaton Stannington with Connor Brown netting both goals in a game that saw them move three points clear of the bottom four.

Dave Frecklington’s side were fresh off the back of a 1-1 draw against Garforth Town, a game that saw Billy Bradley rescue a point for his side at the death.

The Whites went into the game sat 18th in the league, just one place outside the relegation zone whilst being level on points with Brighouse Town who occupied the final spot in the bottom four.

Their opponents, Heaton Stannington, were seventh place before kick-off after falling to a 2-0 loss in their last league fixture against Bishop Auckland.

A strong start

A corner from the right hand side caused the visitors problems just five minutes into the game, the whipped cross fell into the path of Bradley Wells in the box, but his close range effort was blocked and cleared away from danger.

The first huge chance of the game went the way of the hosts just 13 minutes in as Lincoln City loanee Charlie Carlisle did brilliantly to thread through Harvey Cribb but the attacker could only send his shot wide of the post.

A flurry of crosses around the half hour mark resulted in the Whites taking the lead. Heaton Stannington’s goalkeeper Alfie Gordon initially made a fine stop to prevent a Cribb header but Brown followed it in to put the hosts ahead.

Keeping composed

United started the second half strong, Carlisle continued to make an impact down the right hand side, sending a dangerous cross in towards Brown who was longingly waiting for a tap-in but Gordon was quick off his line to cut out the cross.

Bradley did excellently to intercept a pass in the opponents half before finding Carlisle in room on the right hand side. The Lincoln City loanee managed to get a good attempt on target but was denied brilliantly by the feet of Gordon.

The visitors were controversially awarded a penalty with 20 minutes to go after Bradley was penalised for a handball in the box. Deverdics, whose header won the penalty, stepped up and put his side level after sending Richardson the wrong way.

However, they wouldn’t be level for long as Brown would step up once again to put United back in front.

Substitute Andy Jansson made an immediate impact off the bench, massively contributing to the goal as it was his strike that rebounded off the post and into the feet of Brown who tapped home for 2-1.

United held firm and secured all three points, a result that moved them three points clear of the relegation zone heading into their next game against Bishop Auckland on Saturday.
