Russ Wilcox was delighted with his team’s character to come back on a crazy afternoon for Gainsborough Trinity following their 3-3 draw with Workington.
Wilcox’s side were 3-0 down with 25 minutes to go against bottom of the league Workington, however, an opening goal from captain Lewis Butroid, and a brace from Frank Mulhern saw Trinity secure a point in the game.
The Gainsborough boss believes that the performance from his side reflects his group well, especially coming back from behind.
Wilcox said: “To come from 3-0 down, we’ve done it a few times, but it didn’t look like we were going to do that today.
“Very flat first half – they were by far the better team, a yard or two sharper than us in every aspect.
“You do your best at half-time, five minutes in you make the changes, then you go three down, the game plan goes out the window a little bit, but then it’s getting that little bit of quality and first goal that gets the crowd going.
“It’s been a crazy afternoon.”
The Holy Blues are currently in the midst of a crazy run of games that are packed together due to postponements because of the weather, comprising of seven away fixtures, and only six home games at the KAL Group Stadium.
Trinity – prior to this game – came off the back of playing three games away from home in the space of a week.
They will now face Whitby away from home on Tuesday to start their final run of 13 games in around eight or nine weeks, which Wilcox commented on.
He said: “They come thick and fast.
“Whitby have had a free weekend, and that does make a difference, we’ve got to travel as well, lads have to work and travel which is probably a three-hour drive from here.
“It’s going to be a challenge to select a team for that game, but we’ll go there, and we have a great bunch of lads, not just players but some good people in that dressing room – all good people.
“That’s how we can come back from 3-0 down, because it’s not about the football side, it’s what’s under the shirts and a lot of the players have big hearts.
“We work on hard work, and graft.”
