Lindum Men’s 1st team drew 2-2 to Sheffield 1st this Sunday afternoon after a well played yet frustrating game for both sides.
This comes as we enter the final stint of the season, with Lindum’s final match commencing on March 29.
Flying first half
The first half saw a lot of early action. In the second minute of the game, Sheffield took an early lead with a powerful goal after being awarded an early short corner.
Lindum didn’t let them lead for long, as Sam Dixon slapped one in the back of the net to level the score and make it 1-1.
The first quarter ended neck and neck with both teams showing a strong defence. Certainly a lot to be gained from the game today as the third and fourth place sitters in the league both hope to stay in the running for promotion.
The second quarter continued with the same strong attitude to play, with Sheffield managing to sink a goal into the net in the 20th minute to extend their lead to 2-1.
Lindum fought back well but a yellow card in the 26th minute for Lindum saw another short corner awarded to Sheffield. Goalkeeper Dan Garlick anticipated the attack and saved the short, meaning Lindum still trailed by one goal as the first half concluded.
A frustrating second half
Play started a bit slower this time for both sides as Lindum were awarded two short corners in the first ten minutes, both of which failed to amount to a goal.
Not long after, Lindum equalised to make it 2-2. The goal was partially overshadowed by an incident involving Lindum’s Jacob Barnes and a Sheffield player which saw both players sent off with a yellow card.
Shortly after, Sheffield suffered another player loss after a green card was issued. With the visitors now down to nine men, it was all to play for.
Unfortunately, as we entered the fourth and final quarter of the game, an early goal for Lindum’s Harry Antill in the 57th minute was disallowed. The Yellow Submarines still desperately chased that final goal but it was not to be.
Despite several short corners being awarded to the home team in the concluding five minutes of the game, Lindum could not pull through to make it a win. With the game ending in an even 2-2 result, both teams were certainly frustrated with being unable to secure the all important three points, both leaving with one point each at the final whistle.
Vice-captain for Lindum, Ross Booth, said after the game:
“We’ve carried our momentum on from last week where we’ve played really well for the majority of the game but we just lacked that clinical edge to get us the goals which will ultimately make the difference to our result.
“[Sheffield] were defending resolute, their keeper was playing well and the ball would just not drop for us in front of the line.”
Lindum’s next game will be away vs Doncaster on March 7. Kick off 6:30pm.
