Lincoln City have put themselves in a position this weekend where three results could send them to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1961.

Three kicks of a football could reverse seven years in League One, two seasons in League Two and six campaigns outside of the football league.

Generations seeing their team at the highest level they have ever seen them following uncertainty of whether their club may even exist just 15 years ago.

Now it all comes down to 90 minutes of stress, passion and love of the game all possibly ending in tears to begin what could be the perfect Easter weekend.

It’s simple, if Lincoln City find victory over AFC Wimbledon at the LNER Stadium tomorrow they force Bolton Wanderers to beat Plymouth Argyle away from home.

While Stockport County’s game in hand still keeps them in the running at 24 points behind the league leaders meaning they need to beat Wycombe Wanderers at home.

If that was to happen then the only thing stopping Lincoln City achieving their dream is goal difference and the side not picking up a point for the remainder of the season.

Then things would roll over to Easter Monday when the side travel to Reading, however if City win while Bolton and Stockport drop points then the Easter weekend turns into one of celebration for a different reason in the East Midlands.

However, with the two greater Manchester sides facing off against each other on Monday, things seem highly likely to be wrapped up this weekend.

Standing in their way first is one of just five sides to have already got the better of Michael Skubala’s side so far this season.

Skubala isn’t letting any of that change the sides preparation as he may not see some of his international players until the day before the game.

He said: “There’s no reason to approach it any differently, they’re a very tough team to play against, they’ve had an exceptional season for their first season coming into this.

“We’re fully focused on the three points; it’s not the promotion it’s the three points that’s the most important thing because there’s still lots of things that need to go our way anyway.

“We’ve just got to look after ourselves we’ve just got to get the job done and we’ve just got to get the three points, definitely this Friday that will be the case.

“I still think there’s lots of things to go our way so if you’re asking me as a betting man, I’m not sure that it will happen on Friday.”

However, is that simply the Lincoln City head-coach playing things down ahead of what may be the biggest game of the season.

The visitor’s come into this one winless in their last four attempts while the Imps remain unbeaten since November 8.

And despite starting the season off as early play-off contenders, the Dons now find themselves languishing in 14th place in SkyBet League One.

Included in that early season run was a 2-0 win over Skubala’s side in just the second game of the season as Adam Jackson was shown a first half red card and the Imps failed to register a shot on target.

However, Michael Skubala will be without first choice left-back Adam Reach who has now been confirmed to be out for the remainder of the season.

With January signing, Josh Honohan, only just returning to the grass it seems as though Ryler Towler will be ready for his 14th start of the season.

Looking elsewhere, Bolton Wanderers who are also winless in their last three, including a loss against bottom of the table Port Vale, travel to a high-flying Plymouth Argyle.

Who themselves are unbeaten in their last five, a run in which they got the better of play-off contenders Stevenage and Huddersfield Town.

While Stockport seem the most likely to pause City’s promotion party as they come into it unbeaten in three and facing up to an inconsistent Wycombe Wanderers side.

The Hatters’ last loss came against Lincoln City in March while Wycombe recently got the better of Port Vale and Cardiff City but lost out to Leyton Orient and Bolton.

Ultimately, while Michael Skubala refuses to get distracted, promotion on Friday and a new piece of history for his side seems just as likely as it doesn’t.

Undoubtedly, 10,000 Lincoln City fans will descend on a sold out LNER Stadium full of nerves, dread and excitement so let it consume you because it could easily be a day to change lives.
