Dave Frecklington was proud of his Lincoln United players as they came back from a goal down to beat play-off contenders Pontefract Collieries 4-1 away from home.

It was a result that confirmed survival as four second half goals gave the Whites their fourth win in a row as Frecklington remained quiet on his future at the club.

“First half we were quite passive, we set up differently which doesn’t really suit us because we couldn’t really get hold of the ball and when we did we were too slow.

“We had to change at half time and went back to what we know and put Bradley Wells up alongside Connor Brown and that got us on the front foot.

“What a performance.”

“To score four goals, against a team fourth in the league and do a proper job on them is an unbelievable away performance.”

Despite that, the Whites still went in trailing at the break after a lacklustre first half where neither side really posed a threat.

“The message at half-time was just that we needed to be on the front foot more, pass forward, run forward and get the ball in good areas.

“We knew that we could get after their defence because we’re a really good team on the back of three wins in a row

“This is a team unbeaten at home in the league all season and we’ve managed to come here and get three points and it’s just a case of putting belief into the players

“What a response and they’ve been doing that all season, they’ve come back from a goal down and it’s all down to the players.

“They’re the ones that have go out there carry out instructions and express themselves, and they’ve done that today.”

However, there was a slightly sour note to the game as Andy Janssen was stretched off with a dislocated knee late on in the first half.

“It didn’t look good but he’s a great character, he’s happier about the result because we’re a together bunch and what we’ve created is a real strong team bond.

“You can see on the pitch they celebrate every goal and I think Andy’s injury has galvanised us and we wanted to do it for him more than anybody.”

Yesterday’s result mathematically confirmed safety for the Whites and after four wins in a row, Interim manager Dave Frecklington is at least tempted to take the job on full-time.

He said: “We’ll see what the summer brings, I’ve really enjoyed managing this group of players, they’ve given us everything and I think if it went over a 42 game season we’d probably be bang in the play-offs.

“We just instilled belief into the players and they’ve really made this football club proud since New Year’s Day and I love every single one of them, but we’ve got to do what’s right for the football club.

“I knew what these players could do before I came in and football is all about confidence and having a trust in players to play a way that suits them.

“We went back to basics before they were playing a diamond, a 3-5-2 but we changed it to a 4-4-2 because we were bottom of the league and had nothing to lose.”
