Lincoln United confirmed their survival this afternoon following an emphatic turnaround that saw them beat fourth placed Pontefract Collieries 4-1.

Dave Frecklington made one change from the side that beat second placed Emley AFC last time out as Jack Varley came into the side in place of the injured Owen Vincent.

A tense affair

It was a slow start to the game as both sides settled into it before Charlie Carlisle struck the games first shot on target just short of 20 minutes in.

However, that was well caught by Harry Christy before Max Baker and Sam Swinn both saw efforts from outside the 18-yard box fail to threaten inside the first half an hour.

The half then looked to be petering out following a stoppage in play as Andy Janssen was stretchered off, before the hosts took the lead in the first minute of injury time.

Joe Lumsden capitalised on a lapse in judgement in the Whites defence before he turned the ball into an empty net to give the Colls the lead at the break.

Emphatic Whites

However, it was a quicker start to the second half as the Whites turned the game on its head as Kane Hutchinson-Wilkes headed home the first just four minutes into the half.

That came after Connor Brown raced through on goal and had his shot well saved before Hutchinson-Wilkes reacted first and did well to direct his header into the empty net.

That came before Charlie Carlisle gave the Whites the lead as a well worked move from the Whites led to a Connor Brown backheel which played Carlisle through on goal.

That allowed him to drill a low effort into the far bottom left corner from 15-yards out.

The game then petered back to its former self with little goalward action until the hosts threatened for the first time all half with 15 minutes to go.

Lumsden closed in on a bouncing ball inside the penalty area and looked to be pulled down as he went to turn the ball home however, the referee was unmoved as the Whites cleared the ball.

The Whites then put the game to bed in the final five minutes with two quick fire goals as Haydn Havard scored his second goal in as many games when he turned home from a yard out.

It was a goal made by Alan Power as he crossed a free-kick in from the left where Havard was waiting at the back post to turn home.

Connor Brown then sealed the win two minutes later when he pounced on a clever flick from Bradley Wells and turned home from a tight angle six-yards out.

That was how the game ended as a poor Pontefract side struggled to break down Dave Frecklngton’s men as the Whites confirmed their survival.

Next up, the Whites welcome Hallam FC on Easter Monday as they go into the game with the chance to climb the table.
