The last Student Council of this semester was held on Thursday, December 10th. At the meeting a part-time student officer was voted in and the Council decided to affiliate to the Arts Group.
Excluding university and SU staff, and SU officers, 14 people turned up to the meeting. The next Council meeting will be held on January 21st, 2010.
Joe Hicks, a first-year business student, was voted in by the Council to replace Steven Benbow, who was elected as a part-time officer at the main elections in March this year, but has quit the position.
The Council also voted to affiliate to the Arts Group, which Kayleigh Turner, the SU’s vice-president for education, said would help when trying to campaign against “hidden course costs”. The vote on affiliation passed easily, but Dan Derricott, a part-time officer, questioned the “real costs” of affiliating, leading to a bit of a bust-up with Turner, who had said it would cost just £1.50. Derricott is expected to run for the full-time education position in the coming March elections.
According to Joe Hicks, who is also a student trustee, the amount of students visiting the SOAP Centre this semester has risen by about a quarter compared to last year. Students are tallied by staff when they come to make a request.
Correction: Its just £1.50, not £1.50 per student.
Hi Kayleigh,
Thanks for your comment. A correction has been made.
Cheers, £1.50 per student is a lot of money, wouldn’t be considering it if it was that much!
