A chapel within the city has become the first venue in the whole of Lincolnshire, to be able to carry out the marriages of same-sex couples.
The licence, which was issued by the local registry office, came just days after Ireland voted to support same-sex marriage in a landmark referendum.
The Lincoln Unitarian chapel on the corner of Monson Street and the High Street will now offer couples of the same gender the chance to get married in a religious ceremony and setting.
A vote by all of the trustees of the local Unitarian church secured their application for the licence.
The first marriages are likely to take place next year.
