The World Darts Championship is underway once again this year and our LincSport team discuss who they think will the tournament.
Gary Anderson is the defending champion as he beat 16-time World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor last year. World number one Michael Van Gerwen is the favourite to win the tournament, but who do our writers think will be victorious?
Adam Tomlinson – Sports Editor: It is hard to write off Michael Van Gerwen as he’s been in scintillating form so far this year. Gary Anderson and Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor will provide stiff competition for the Dutchman, but if he carries on his fine form, he should win his second World Championship.
Liam Ray – Deputy Sports Editor: Michael Van Gerwen has been the best player in the world so far this year. If he carries his form on, he’ll be unbeatable. Reckon he’ll beat Taylor in the final.
Ryan Hall: World number one Michael van Gerwen is the clear favourite but you can never write off Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor. Gary Anderson will also be there or there abouts come the latter stages of the competition so it really is all to play for in one of the most open World Championships ever.
Ollie Collins: I can’t see anyone other than ‘mighty’ Michael Van Gerwin taking home the trophy. The mean green machine has been in great form this year.
Elliott Dalton: There’s no denying that World no. 1 Michael Van Gerwen is in the best form coming into the tournament, however he has shown that he doesn’t favour the sets format of the game compared to legs format; his last set format win was his World Championship victory two years ago. I’m fancying Adrian Lewis to win his third World Championship this year. He loves this event and hit a sublime 9 dart finish on the Ally Pally stage last year. He’s also come into it in good form, being edged out by MVG in the final of the Players’ Championship last month, the final tournament before the Worlds.
