It is understood that Brayford Trust, who put forward the proposals, were hoping a second restaurant would provide them with a revenue stream to help work on dredging the Brayford Pool.

Instead, the City of Lincoln Council’s Executive agreed to offer a loan to the trust to help with this work.

Councillor Fay Smith said: “I’m hoping that the trust will accept what I think is a reasonable offer.”

Plans for a second restaurant were initially rejected by the council’s planning committee, only for this decision to be overturned by the Government’s planning inspectorate last year.

Now, however, the council have once again rejected the plans in their capacity as landlords, arguing that the open space of the Brayford Pool needs to be protected.

Councillor Rosanne Kirk said: “It’s an ancient pool, it’s a part of our history and I believe it should be protected.”

The council’s offer will now be submitted to the Brayford Trust for them to consider.
