The George Johnson Education Centre, based on Weaver Road, aims to support young people aged between 11 and 16 who have been excluded from mainstream education or struggle with emotional or behavioural issues.

George ‘Johnny’ Johnson MBE DFM, who taught people with learning difficulties in peacetime, said it was ‘a great honour and privilege’ to have the centre named after him.

“The work I’ve done during my lifetime with people with mental health problems has been hugely rewarding and the centre is an extension of that.

“Young people with emotional or behavioural problems often get overlooked so this is a wonderful opportunity for students to get the education and support they need to help them reach their full potential,” he said.

In addition to its Weaver Road site, the centre also has a training facility at building firm Gelder Group’s premises in Sturton by Stow.
