The University of Lincoln’s Rugby League team have announced that Lincoln SU has withdrawn funding from the club.
In a statement released on social media, the team said the club will be “unlikely to be able to continue” without the money from the Students’ Union.
“At this year’s society funding meeting, our club was informed that we would no longer receive funding for transport, coaching, training facilities and university rugby affiliation, that would normally be provided by the Student’s Union [sic].”
The message adds: “This is honestly a heart-breaking prospect for those who have invested significant time and effort, into the success of the club, both past and present.
“For many of our members, the club is more than just playing rugby and we believe this to be a significant oversight from the Student’s Union [sic].”
The statement also comments on the team’s recent performance, saying that it has been “undoubtedly below the standard we have set in year’s [sic] prior” before adding that the club has put new measures in place to “ensure improved recruitment and performance”.
The Lincoln Swans have also announced that they are to launch an appeal to the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the SU against the decision.
The Linc has contacted the University of Lincoln’s Students’ Union for comment.
