Police say the incident – as well as a warrant executed on Ruston Way, Lincoln – were in connection with a burglary carried out in Worksop on 14 May.

“It was reported that offenders wearing face coverings forced their way into a house in Norfolk Street, Worksop, before one of them hit the victim in the head with the pickaxe at about 9.40pm on Monday 14 May.

“It’s believed another was armed with a shotgun.

“The victim was taken to hospital with head injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening,” Nottinghamshire Police said.

Police are calling for anyone with any information relating to the incident or saw anything suspicious on the night to call 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting incident number 943 of 14 May 2018.

Update: The University of Lincoln’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Simon Parkes, has since emailed a statement to staff and students about the incident.

It reads: “I would like to thank staff and the police for their professionalism during the incident today where a man was arrested as he walked through our campus.

“This incident has been widely reported and some of the speculation about its nature has been misleading.

“The man was not a student, he did not enter any of the University’s buildings and the incident was not connected to the University in any way.

“I am so impressed by University of Lincoln staff and students. As the incident happened the library staff kept students in the library to allow police to complete their arrest, which was absolutely the right thing to do.

“I am grateful for their quick thinking.”
