Lincoln City goalkeeper Alex Palmer described his team-mates as ‘unbelievable’ ahead of Saturday’s game against Burton Albion.
The Imps number one has enjoyed a successful start to the season, keeping 11 clean sheets in all competitions.
Ahead of the visit of Burton, Palmer spoke about how his time compares with his loan spell last season with Plymouth Argyle and how he commands his team-mates on the pitch.
Clean sheet success
The 24-year-old enjoyed a successful loan with Plymouth Argyle last season, achieving promotion to League One. He kept 15 clean sheets in all competitions, nine of which came before Boxing Day.
When asked about the difference is defensive success at both clubs, Palmer said: “Maybe it’s because I’ve been lucky with the defenders I’ve had!
“Last year we had a set back five that were regulars. And then this season we’ve got a bunch of lads who are unbelievable to be fair in possession and out of possession.
“With the lads in front of me, they limit the opportunities that teams have got, and then if they do break down then obviously I’m there.”
Palmer is one of the more vocal players on the pitch, and behind-closed-doors football has meant that his voice booms around the LNER Stadium.
However, it is something that he takes great pride in.
“I pride myself on the communication side as well, I think that helps and I think the defenders like it as well.
“I think it’s something beneficial for me – it keeps me on my toes and in the game when I perhaps don’t have a lot to do. It certainly keeps the defenders ticking over in those games when we are not getting worked as much.”
Similarities between his time at Plymouth and now
After 18 games, the Imps sit joint top alongside Portsmouth on 35 points, and as a result, will be targeting a push for promotion during the second half of the season.
Palmer experienced promotion from League Two with Ryan Lowe’s Plymouth, and can see similar characteristics in both sides.
“Yeah definitely, I see that hunger, that mix of experience and youthfulness,” he said.
“It’s good. We have said among the few people that have experienced promotion that we have definitely got a strong group bond and that can only be beneficial.
“We’ve got a great gaffer and coaching staff as well, so it’s only positive vibes at the moment, which is all good.”
