Conservative politician Karl McCartney, who represents Lincoln in the House of Commons, has blocked the University of Lincoln (UoL) Labour Society on Twitter following condemnation of his voting record, in a stark move away from cross-party cooperation.

Though it’s unclear when exactly the decision to block the account was made, it followed a scathing Tweet by the group, aimed at Mr McCartney’s vote against the current national lockdown.

The MP cited “the mental well-being of school pupils” among the reasons for his rebellion against the Government.

In response, UoL Labour Society Tweeted: “You voted against free school meals but now claim to care for children’s well-being? There is no excuse, and no defence.”

Callum Roper, president of the group, said: “It’s the local MP trying to get out of accountability and […] I think people share that sentiment that, actually, he’s not listening to us as constituents.

“A legitimate question has just been batted away by the block button on Twitter.”

An active member on the social media platform, Mr McCartney has previously called those who criticise him “snowflakes”, “haters” and “bitter”, and said: “[…] what does it matter what I [Retweet] or post, it’s not yr [sic] account.”

The Linc reached out to Karl McCartney for comment, but received no response.
