Lincoln United travelled away to Worksop Town in the Northern Premier League – East Division, where they were thrashed 6-0 by the home side, continuing their winless start to the league season.

Worksop Town boasted a strong side with players such as Paul Green, who has 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland, and James Hanson, a Bradford city legend who starred in their cup upset against Chelsea in 2015. They also had Terry Hawkridge, whose brace fired Lincoln City back to the football league in 2017.

Lincoln United won the toss and that would be the only thing they would win against Worksop. Worksop started the game sharply and would’ve punished United early if not for a heroic goal-line clearance from Callum Foster scrambling it to safety.

It did not take long for Worksop to get ahead as Josh Wilde’s cross from the left was met with a glancing header from Jay Rollins to put the hosts in front.

Once again, Callum Foster cleared the ball off the line more impressively than the last time, stopping another almost certain Worksop goal.

Lincoln United then conceded a potential goal of the season contender as Aleks Starcenko sat down his defender with a brilliant piece of skill, patted him on the head, then curled the ball into the far-right top corner from outside the box.

Worksop were unfortunate not to score any more in the first half as Starcenko went close again, hitting the post from distance.

The White’s chances were few and far between with United heavily relying on inspiration from Tobias Liversidge. The young winger was the vocal point of every attack and their only threat going forward.

Half-Time – Worksop Town 2-0 Lincoln United.

United once again started the half poorly. This time it took just seven minutes for Worksop Town to score. Starcenko crossed the ball into the box where United goalkeeper, Ben Bottomley, fumbled the ball straight into the path of Wilde, who extended their lead with an easy tap-in.

Lincoln United then had the ball in the back of the net after a Worksop Town defender headed into his own net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside for an unclear reason.

Lincoln looked poor defensively the whole night and in the 64th minute, were punished once again. A goal-line scramble led to Jack Broadhead scoring this time.

A rampant Worksop display was to be continued, with United on the ropes, Liam Hughes performed an astonishing diving header to extend their lead to five.

Worksop outran Lincoln the whole night and with The Whites blowing, in the 90th minute, Jay Rollins dashed through the defence and blasted home a thunderous strike into the top corner.

Full-Time: Worksop Town 6-0 Lincoln United

Lincoln United have a long season ahead as they find themselves winless in 5 and 19th in the league table, where relegation looms.

United will be thankful to take a break from the league as they face Daventry Town away in the FA Trophy this Saturday.
