Although plans haven’t been finalised, the school is aiming for its first independent cohort in September 2026.
Lincoln Medical School is currently a partnership between The University of Lincoln and the University of Nottingham.
Students are trained on Lincoln’s Brayford Pool Campus but are registered under the University of Nottingham.
It’s hoped Lincolnshire’s first medical school will help fill ‘’chronic’’ medical staff shortages in the region and reduce health inequalities in its most deprived areas.
Professor Danny McLaughlin, Associate Dean of Medicine at the school, thinks going independent may increase that possibility.
Speaking to The Linc, he said: ‘’There’s a lot of work to do but we have a lot of good people already working in the Medical School who are extremely committed to creating an independent school.’’
‘’By the time we go independent, we will have a good reputation of having produced a cohort of doctors working locally.’’
The plans would be subject to approval from several bodies including the General Medical Council, and Health Education England, who have both given their initial support.
The building has the facilities to expand their annual intake from 80 to 120 students, should the government increase the number of medical student places.
Lincolnshire’s diverse landscape, including countryside and coastline, will play a key role in the new curriculum.
Professor McLaughlin said: ‘’We would want to have a distinct identity and Lincoln or Lincolnshire flavour, perhaps with rural and coastal medicine elements in it.’’
‘’We’ve got a lot going for us and hopefully we can capitalise on that and create a really good medical school in Lincolnshire for Lincolnshire.’’
