Michael Skubala spoke to the media following Lincoln City‘s dominant 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.
The win stretched City’s unbeaten run to nine games. The Imps have now also won five of their last six in SkyBet League One in a run that has seen them just creep back into play-off contention.
A fast start:
Lincoln took the lead through Ted Bishop after just six minutes, but could easily have put the game out of sight within the first 20 as they blew Shrewsbury away in the opening exchanges.
Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Skubala said: “The first 20 minutes we were electric, I have to say, I thought the lads were unbelievable, the way we came out against a team which turned Reading over 3-2 last week was just unbelievable.”
Ted Bishop could have had a first half hat-trick on another day, but Lincoln just couldn’t find a second before half-time, leaving them vulnerable to a possible Shrewsbury fight back.
When asked if he thought missed chances could come back to bite them, Skubala said: “No I’m confident, we’d been really brilliant without the ball and hadn’t conceded many touches so I thought if we just keep the level, keep the discipline, keep the intensity, we’d go again.”
High Press paying off:
The Imps pressed from the front from the word go and didn’t allow Shrewsbury any time to settle, that created them a number of chances that allowed them to eventually kill the game.
When asked about his sides high press, Skubala said: “Yeah we worked on it yesterday, saying this is how we’re going to go after it…and yeah it was fantastic.”
Sharing the goals around:
Lincoln have been sharing the goals around the team all season and this game was no different with both wing backs and a centre midfielder being the ones who got the decisive moments.
The Imps head coach said: “I think when you see goals being shared around you know we’re in a good place because the way we’re trying to play goals can come from different areas.”
Defence solidity just as important:
Lincoln have now kept six clean sheets in eight games and are undoubtedly one of SkyBet League One’s best defensive outfits. Skubala was keen to praise his backline especially for their set-piece work.
“The really pleasing thing for me tonight was how we dealt with Chey Dunkley on set pieces he didn’t have a lot, he’s a real handful, Scotty Fry our set-piece goalkeeping coach had a plan to put two on him and we really nullified him, so I was really pleased,” he said.
Lincoln host play-off chasing Stevenage in a huge game at the LNER Stadium on Saturday with a chance to reduce the gap to Steve Evans’ side to just five points.
