Lincoln City swept past Cambridge United on Tuesday night, hitting Garry Monk’s side for six.
It was the Imps first 6-0 win since 1976/77, when they beat Nuneaton Town by the same scoreline in the FA Cup.
City are now unbeaten in their last 12 games, as their continue a late play-off surge and put pressure on the teams above them.
Head Coach Michael Skubala:
The Lincoln head coach stressed the importance of carrying on focusing “game by game”, as his side continue to stride forward on a fine unbeaten run.
On the message that he’s giving his team, he said: “[I’m saying] be ruthless, be ruthless when you get into the final third. Make sure we commit to scoring, and make sure we do everything right, and make sure that we go after it with pace. I think they’re showing their ruthlessness in the last two games in front of goal.”
“We talked about when we get into the final third, but we haven’t really converted enough chances up until now. But, you’re seeing that coming through now,” he added.
His substitutes had a real impact on Tuesday night, with both Dylan Duffy and TJ Eyoma getting their names on the scoresheet.
The Imps boss said: “We’re making sure everyone feels part of it, so when they’re called upon they perform. I think that is what’s really brilliant about the group, they know if they’re in the team: great, they’ve got to keep the shirt, and if they’re not in the team: they’ve got to play well and effect the game.”
“I think that really drives the group on, the mentality is really solid and together at the minute. They want to do well for each other,” he added.
Jack Moylan added another brace to his two goals in the second-half at Barnsley. The Irishman now has four goals and an assist in one-and-a-half games.
Skubala said: “We used him in a role that was inside and outside depending on how the press is. He found those little pockets. I thought his work rate without the ball, especially in the first-half, was electric.”
Substitute Scorer Dylan Duffy:
Dylan Duffy found his name on the scoresheet, coming on during the second-half.
Lincoln are now twelve games unbeaten. It’s a run that has brought them within striking distance of Steve Evans’ Stevenage and the last play-off spot.
Duffy said: “It’s really fun, coming on today I was full of confidence. I had a feeling when I came on that I might nick a goal, I felt like the game suited me. It was quite open, which suits me getting up and down.”
“It’s brilliant to play in this team at the minute,” he added.
Fellow Irishman Moylan took the man of the match award, for his first-half brace. His teammate, and housemate, Duffy is happy for him.
He said: “That fella is absolutely flying. Me and Jack live together and I’m just absolutely delighted for him, it couldn’t happen to a better bloke, honestly.”
The versatile wide-man said it “definitely” gives him confidence that he could break into the team himself.
He added: “I know how it is at the minute, I’m not naïve. Like Reeco [Hackett], in my opinion he should have got player of the month last month, he’s absolutely flying.
“So, I just need to bide my time, I’m 21 years old, I know my chances will come. I just need to take them when they come,” Duffy continued.
With the Imps now just three points behind the play-off spots, he said the team need to take it “game by game” as they enter the run-in.
Lincoln City now turn their attention to Saturday, as they welcome Bristol Rovers to the LNER Stadium.
