Sean Roughan reveals the key to Lincoln City‘s recent defensive success, as the Imps prepare for the visit of Bristol Rovers.
Speaking to LincSport, he said: “We’ve defended our box really well. We haven’t done anything stupid. Any cross that’s comes in, [Lukas] Jensen has done really well and come out for it, and we’ve all just came together as team.”
Michael Skubala‘s side have kept four clean sheets in the last five games, seeing them to four victories. The other was a goalless draw against Steve Evans and his Stevenage team at the LNER Stadium.
“When you see the last 20 minutes of the first-half against Barnsley, when the going gets tough we stuck together and made sure they weren’t going to score,” Roughan said.
Lincoln are knocking on the door of the play-offs, now sitting just three points behind Stevenage. City’s twelve game unbeaten run has seen them rise up the table and begin to worry the teams above them.
Squad depth has become important for Skubala men, with a duo of substitutes scoring in both of Lincoln’s two emphatic victories over the past week.
Roughan said: “We’ve had that all year. We’ve got to keep pushing each other, it’s football and it’s a ruthless sport. If you’re in the team you’re going to have to perform and if you aren’t in the team you’re going to have to push to get back in the team.”
The Imps cruised past Cambridge United 6-0 on Tuesday night, with a convincing and dominant display. Roughan was a part of the back-three that kept Garry Monk’s U’s out.
“It’s up to us to keep pushing and pushing,” he added.
The Irishman is just one appearance away from equalling the amount of SkyBet League One games he played last campaign.
He said: “Obviously, I’d like to play more than I already have. That’s the type of person I am, I want to play as much as possible, but to try and get over last year’s appearances would be very good and another milestone that I’d hit.”
