Lincoln City Women vs Peterborough United Women

Lincoln City Women fell to defeat at the LNER Stadium, as Peterborough United came from behind to win.

The Imps fought back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1, before the visitors turned the game back around to escape with all three points.

The match was blighted by the windy conditions that neither side really adapted to. Peterborough got the game underway and from the off it was a well fought match with both teams refusing to shirk from heavy tackles.

Posh took an early lead through Emily Brett who capitalised on confusion in the Lincoln City defence, allowing her to easily beat the stranded Lana Timpson.

The Imps fought back to equalise on the 12 minute mark when the dangerous Maddi Green placed her first time finish well past Neive Corry.

Peterborough looked to try and regain their lead, but Poppie Brown’s effort was held by Lana Timson.

Just a minute later, Leah Hardy made it 2-1 to the Imps, finishing off a well worked counter-attack to complete an early turn-around.

Peterborough pushed for the equaliser, but the windy conditions made the game scrappy and didn’t help either side. The Posh went closest to equalising with Kier Perkins effort but Timson parried away from danger.

The Imps went into the break with Lee Mitchell’s side 2-1 up at the half-way point.

Lincoln nearly increased their lead early in the second-half, but Millie Quaintance’s volley flew just wide of the Posh goal.

Peterborough grew into the game with Megan Lawlor going close for the visitors. They found the equaliser in the 73rd minute when Emily Brett nodded in her brace from Lawlor’s cross.

The visiting Posh looked like the more likely side to go on and win the match, as Evie Driscoll-King headed just wide at the back post from a deep corner with the time ticking by.

They found the eventual winner when a hopeful long ball was pumped up the pitch and caught the wind. In trying to clear it, the Lincoln City defender could only nod it into her own goal.

Lincoln fought to try and find a late equaliser but couldn’t create any meaningful chances. The loss dents Lee Mitchell and his side’s hopes of finishing the season strongly, as they sit just five points ahead of the relegation zone.

The Imps have no lost their last three games, failing to win in any of their last four outings. Lincoln have just two games remaining in their season, next travelling to Notts County on Sunday, April 21.
