Lindum Hockey‘s wait for a first win of the season goes on as Brooklands Manchester University put five past the Yellow Submarine.
The game was level at the half-time, before a trio of third quarter goals took the game away from the Lincoln-based side.
An Even First-Half:
After the early exchanges failed to provide a chance for either side, both went close. Freddie Davies fired wide for the visitors, who came into the game unbeaten and in second-placed, before Matt Goodley and Michael Harris forced a fine double save from Brooklands’ Tom Marshall.
Marshall was to be a busy man throughout the 70 minutes, and showed his quality with a number of top class saves.
Lindum had a penalty corner towards the end of the first quarter. It was won and taken by Goodley, who set it back to Jacob Barnes. He laid it off to Louie Sadler, only for his effort to be blocked.
Then, a penalty corner that brought the first goal of the game, as the ball was put into the back of Dan Garlick’s net courtesy of Brooklands’ captain Peter Flanagan. He converted with a piercing strike into the bottom corner of the Lindum goal for his fourth in as many games.
There were a string of chances for their visitors to extend their league, before Ben Read made them rue their misses. He rifled a shot through a crowd and into the far corner of Marshall’s net for his first of the campaign to level the game before half-time.
A Third Quarter Barrage:
Josh Baxendell went close for the Manchester outfit, as he looked to tip the ball in after good work from Leo Watton following the half-time interval. However, it was then Lindum that hit the front foot.
Goodley shot wide after making a mazy run to create the eventual shot on goal. Harry Antill had one of the best chances of the game, as he was found in space by Sam Dixon. His shot forced a strong save from Marshall, while Dixon’s follow-up smacked the woodwork.
Against the run of play, Brooklands retook the lead. It was another penalty corner, and another goal for Flanagan, as he swept the ball underneath Garlick’s pads.
That did not stop Lindum creating another big chance. Dixon squared the ball to Sam Perrin, who could not find his footing and stumbled before taking his effort. A slapshot from Read then followed, before the visitors showed their clinical edge once again.
Baxendell slid the ball home after some fine work down the left found him in the centre of Lindum’s area.
Penalty Shots for Both Sides:
Just moments later, in the 52nd minute, the game was put to bed. Michael White clipped the stick of Watton, and conceded a penalty shot. James Sutcliffe stepped up and fired the ball in, despite Garlick going the right way and narrowly evading what would have been an impressive stop.
Dixon found himself the recipient of a penalty shot at the other end before the third quarter came to a close. Although, he did not have the same success and found the legs of Marshall instead of the net.
Garlick made a fine diving save to prohibit Baxendell from adding his second of the afternoon, as he turned and shot in the area.
Angus Graham forced a pad save and White fired wide, before the fifth goal came for Brooklands. Watton’s initial effort was parried by Garlick, but it only came to Sam Young. He laid it back to Watton, who made no mistake on the second attempt.
Lindum have a sole point from their first four games at Division One North level, and will have to pick themselves back up before the visit of Nottingham University on Sunday, October 20.
