The University of Lincoln’s sports teams took a huge step towards retaining the Varsity trophy for the fifth consecutive year on Monday March 22nd, winning all but two of the scheduled fixtures.
Of the nine matches, just the netball first team and the men’s basketball first team suffered defeats at the hands of their Derby counterparts.
The netball first team narrowly lost 24 – 28, while the basketball team were unable to prevent a 58-84 loss.
Lincoln’s second netball team atoned for their colleagues’ disappointment with a comprehensive 46-35 win over their Derby counterparts.
There were wins too in squash, and for the men’s first and second hockey teams, with the latter thrashing Derby 8-2.
Chris Farrell, Lincoln Students’ Union’s vice-president for sports and teams, says he is pleased with the first day’s results.
He said: “Day one was very successful. All the teams put a huge effort into their games. I have to highlight both women’s basketball and Lincoln Hockey for being quality matches to watch. The atmosphere was brilliant.
“I am looking forward to Wednesday and day two. It should be an excellent day of sport and hopefully the day we keep the Varsity title.”
Should the return set of fixtures today yield similar results, Lincoln sports societies can look forward to maintaining their unblemished record in the Varsity competition, having won in all four previous years.
The return leg in Derby will see competition in rowing, men’s football, women’s football, equestrian, tennis, rugby union, and American football.
