Over the years, “Sex and The City”‘s main characters, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte have all developed an individual and distinct style which has inspired many of us to follow particular fashion trends, whether it be oversized bags, personalised necklaces, tutus, or wearing stilettos with everything.
Unfortunately, not everyone has a $10 million budget – the alleged price-tag of all the clothes worn in the new film. However, this doesn’t mean people with smaller budgets can’t get a taste of their favourite character’s wardrobes.
With more and more choice from the High Street and online shops, and some even offering SATC inspired collections (Asos.com, Boohoo.com and Debenhams), it’s easy to steal the looks from the girls.
Women are drawn to Carrie as she shows a quirky sense of style and a fearlessness in what she wears. To pull off her look, you can’t be afraid to put things together that may or may not work. But don’t worry, photos released from SATC2 show a more laidback approach that doesn’t take much effort at all. You can take a plain summery dress worn with a big necklace for a quick and feminine look. Marks and Spencer’s have a High Street alternative to Carrie’s v-neck angel sleeve dress in red and black for just under £20.
For a more elegant look, you could opt for a £35 one shoulder dress from River Island, teamed with accessories and a scarf wrapped around flowing hair for a perfect beach outfit. Both examples give you Carrie-inspired summer outfits for a fraction of the price.
Samantha, on the other hand, is loved for her confident, sexy style, that of an independent woman who is not afraid to dress younger than she actually is and succeeding in looking fabulous.
To put a Samantha feel in your clothing, head to Topshop for a wide collection of harem trousers that flatter every shape and a Samantha-inspired body-con dress with a twist. This £35 hibiscus print dress definitely gives a plain LBD a summery feel, as well as giving you an air of confidence like Samantha.
Miranda, the suited yet stylish mother, gives women another option. We’ve seen her in dungarees and flip flops as well as high end pieces by Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix. Her style radiates her personality, from laidback to confident and career-driven. A Miranda-inspired summer wardrobe will feature earthy colours and stylish prints, with perfect examples on the High Street, like this graphic maxi-dress from Topshop for £35 or this jersey vest dress from French Connection, also £35 which is perfect for hot summer nights out.
And finally, there’s Charlotte. Her style is consistent, a simple and elegant style that radiates her feminine, well-to-do personality. Charlotte’s wardrobe consists of mostly soft colours, prints and smart dresses, an understated style compared to fearless Carrie. Those who prefer much less risky fashion will be more suited to Charlotte-inspired summer outfits that offer the same amount of glamour.
French Connection have a great selection of dresses to choose from, but this stretch vest body-con dress is perfect as it projects class with a modern twist. To keep cool, this belted stripe prom dress is probably a better option, and could be worn to a formal event or dressed down with gladiator sandals, a different belt and accessories.
Whether you fit a particular character’s style or want to experiment with all, Sex and the City has never failed to open our eyes to different designers and inspire the way we dress. After all, all anyone could talk about after the last film was the outfits. Once you’ve seen the film, why not head down to the shops with friends and see which character’s style suits you best?
